Research has shown that the side effects common with CO2 lasers (hypopigmentation and prolonged erythema) are caused by thermally-induced inflammation and tissue necrosis. This will always be a concern for CO2 resurfacing technology because there is no way to separate the heat from the ablation. Sciton re-surfacing lasers are different since the treatments are able to ablate with virtually no heat deposition because of extremely high energy absorption in water.

The side effects common with other technologies are rarely observed with a Sciton® laser, even in very deep treatments.
